El 14 de marzo tuvo lugar en la libreria asociativa Sahiri de València, Estado Español, la charla-debate «La violencia policial en México», a cargo de Italia Méndez, ex presa de Atenco, miembro de 5ª Brigada y adherente a La Otra Campaña. También intervino con Cristina Valls, catalana deportada ilegalmente, en mayo de 2006. El encuentro se enmarcaba en las actividades anunciadas a nivel internacional a propósito del día internacional contra la brutalidad policial (15 de marzo).
La exposición de Italia giró entorno a cómo se vivió en primera persona una agresión policial tan brutal a los compañeros y compañeras, especialmente hacía las mujeres los días 3 y 4 de mayo de 2006. Una agresión que, como sabemos y no debemos olvidar, estuvo organizada y coordinada entre los tres niveles de gobierno (federal, estatal y municipal). A lo largo de toda la charla, el zapatismo fue el hilo común que enlazaba las resistencias, aprovechándose también para remarcar la necesidad de denunciar bien alto que las Comunidades están siendo embestidas y despojadas, realizando un llamado a la sociedad civil internacional a movilizarse para no permitir el horror de la guerra.
La intervención de Italia nos acercó a conocer cúal fue y está siendo el proceso de recuperación emocional y psicologica que atraviesan las compañeras, fundamentalmente mediante el apoyo mutuo y la solidaridad. Al mismo tiempo incidió en cómo se està reorganizando la resistencia de las mujeres de Atenco ante los procesos jurídicos abiertos, respetando los ritmos individuales y potenciando la organización colectiva frente a la otra brutalidad, la de las leyes y su dilación burocrática arbitraria.
Cristina Valls por su parte aportó su experiéncia, matizando los términos de la querella interpuesta el pasado 25 de enero, asegurando que dicha denuncia pretende complementar el esfuerzo de las compañeras y compañeros que recibieron la represión. En este sentido Italia Méndez ofreció la visión que se ha tenido desde México al respecto. Precisamente, el poner la demanda en el Estado Español ha servido como complemento e impulso para retomar el caso Atenco incluso en los grandes medios de comunicación mexicanos (Tele Azteca y Televisa), donde aún por breve espacio de tiempo, se hicieron eco de la notícia en enero pasado, aunque «sin sacar las palabras de Cristina en la rueda de prensa de Madrid». Básicamente la querella ha evidenciado que las intervenciones para investigar y esclarecer lo sucedido ahora hace casi dos años, han sido incesantemente manipuladas y trabadas, conllevando la impunidad de los autores intelectuales y materiales.
No se dejó por tratar el actual plan del gobierno y las corporaciones multinacionales procurando volver a imponer «cueste lo que cueste» el aeropuerto internacional insertado en el Plan Puebla Panamá y los sucesivos planes transnacionales. En esta ocasión, se esta buscando disfrazar el proyecto con falsedades como la de asegurar que no se expropiarán terrenos ni afectaría a los pobladores de Atenco ni tampoco en términos ecológicos. Es necesario desenmascarar dichas falacias y de nuevo centrar la atención internacional en Atenco, debido a que se suceden los hostigamientos para que no se reavive la dignidad y la combatitividad que caracteriza al FPDT y al resto de organizaciones sociales que luchan por un Atenco libre de planes capitalistas. El ambiente distendido permitió mantener un diálogo entre los asistentes, destacando los razonamientos acerca de entender la tortura y la violación como «arma de guerra» por parte de cualquier institución gubernamental contra quienes nos organizamos al margen de esta política criminal. Al final hubieron ventas de discos y camisetas para apoyar a las presas y presos de Atenco.
La próxima actividad será para la celebración de los 2 años de la resistencia de Atenco. El 26 de mayo en el Aula Magna de la Universitat de València contaremos con la participación de Paloma Soria, abogada de Cristina Valls, y la participación de Ariadna Nieto y Laia Serra, periodista de medios alternativos y abogada respectivamente, detenidas el pasado mes de agosto en Oaxaca (México).

Italia Méndez and Cristina Valls speak about Atenco in Valencia
On March 14 there was a talk-debate on “Police Violence in Mexico” at the Sahiri Bookstore in Valencia, Spanish State, featuring Italia Méndez––ex Atenco prisoner, member of the 5th Brigade, and adherent to the Other Campaign––, and Cristina Valls, the young Catalan woman who was illegally deported in May of 2006. The event was one of several activities held around the world on the International Day Against Police Brutality (March 15).
Italia’s talk centered on her firsthand experience of the brutal police aggression against the comrades at Atenco, especially the women, on May 3 & 4, 2006. As we know and should never forget, the attack was organized and coordinated by the three levels of government (federal, state, and municipal). During the entire discussion, Zapatismo was the common thread among the various resistances and there was emphasis on the need to forcefully denounce the fact that the Zapatista communities are being attacked and dispossessed; a call went out to the international civil society to refuse to permit the horrors of war.
Italia acquainted us with the process of emotional and psychological recuperation that the female comrades have gone through, from the very beginning up until now, basically through mutual support and solidarity. At the same time she talked about how the resistance of the Atenco women is being reorganized around the open cases; an effort is being made to respect individual rhythms and empower collective organization in the face of another kind of brutality, that of the laws and arbitrary bureaucratic delays.
Cristina Valls spoke of her experience, relating it to the terms of the complaint filed last January 25, which is aimed at complementing the efforts being made by the comrades who were targets of repression. Likewise, Italia Méndez commented on the reception of this initiative in Mexico. She said that filing the complaint with the Spanish State has served as a complement and has opened the question of Atenco once again in the major Mexican news media, even Tele Azteca and Televisa. Both channels gave brief coverage to this news last January but left out what Cristina had said at the Madrid press conference. The complaint has revealed that the efforts to investigate and clarify what happened almost two years ago have been incessantly manipulated and blocked, underscoring the impunity of both the intellectual and material authors.
A major concern now is the plan of the government and the multinational corporations to proceed with the imposition of the international airport, no matter what the cost, in keeping with its projection in the Puebla-Panama Plan and successive projects. This time around, the government is trying to disguise the project with false promises; representatives are saying that they will not expropriate lands and that the airport will not affect the people who live in Atenco, not even in ecological terms. It’s important to unmask these fallacies and to focus international attention on Atenco once more, especially now that the harassment is being stepped up to make sure there are no new displays of the dignity and combativity characteristic of the FPDT and the other social organizations that have struggled for an Atenco free of capitalist plans. The relaxed atmosphere allowed for a dialogue to take place between the participants, with an emphasis on understanding torture and rape as an “arm of war” that can be used by any government institution against those of us who are organizing against this criminal policy. At the end of the event, records and t-shirts were sold to support the Atenco prisoners.
The next activity will be the celebration of 2 years of Atenco’s resistance. On May 26, in the Auditorium of the University of Valencia, our guests will be Cristina Valls’ lawyer Paloma Soria, as well as indy journalist Ariadna Nieto and the lawyer Laia Serra, both of whom were arrested last August in Oaxaca, Mexico.
